Tortilla Sandwich
What is it? A mixture of the Mexican and American heritage which once fused together creates the culture I grew up with. A culture where I watched every India Maria movie, my hero was El Chapulin Colorado, I had atole for breakfast, yet at the same time I never missed an episode of Saturday Night Live, my favorite meal was mom's meatloaf and I dreamed of being in the Ramones.

Back to School

Well it's that time of year, back to school time.

As a child I would always look forward to going back to school. My eagerness was not due to all the classroom discussions, bookreports, and ugh, gym class experiences I'd rather forget. No, my favorite part of the back to school ritual was purchasing my school supplies.

There was nothing like sniffing a fresh box of Crayolas or admiring all the bright colors that it contained, imagining all the great creations that would come from that box. One thing that made me mad was that there was never an appropriate color for drawings of myself or my family, not the right color of brown for our skin. The brown crayon was too dark, the tan ,well that just wasn't gonna work unless you were drawing a piece of wheat toast, and then there was this horrid color called "brown sienna", looked like a mixture of mud and whatever is found in a septic tank. My anglo friends never had problems, the peach color worked just fine for them. I hope Crayola has gotten it right by now.

Speaking of Crayola:

I remember my first Traperkeeper. That thing was bad ass.

Oh, yeah, TrapperKeepers were the coolest, I remembering getting a new one every year. I can still hear the sound of the velcro.
